About LFJ

Literacy for Justice is an educational platform committed to promoting equitable, high-quality literacy instruction for all students, especially those from historically marginalized communities. We provide educators with research-based resources, professional learning, and practical strategies that integrate structured literacy with culturally responsive, asset-based teaching. Our goal is to ensure every child receives the reading instruction they deserve, grounded in evidence, enriched by culture, and driven by justice.

Meet the Founder

Hello there! I’m Sarah Sharpe – an educator, literacy researcher, and proud founder of Literacy for Justice. With a Ph.D. in Reading Education, I serve as an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education, dedicating my career to empowering future educators, equipping current teachers with best literacy practices, and advocating for reading instruction that is not only effective but also deeply affirming. I created Literacy for Justice to passionately bridge the gap between the science of reading and the vibrant realities of diverse learners. Every child is brimming with potential, and every educator deserves tools that genuinely reflect that truth.

Our Mission

Literacy for Justice empowers educators with the tools, knowledge, and resources to deliver structured, evidence-based reading instruction that honors students’ cultural identities and lived experiences. We are committed to advancing literacy equity through professional learning, advocacy, and inclusive teaching practices that reflect the brilliance and resilience of historically marginalized communities.

Our Vision

We envision a future where every child, regardless of race, language, or zip code, receives high-quality literacy instruction rooted in justice, cultural affirmation, and academic excellence. Through transformative educator support and community engagement, Literacy for Justice strives to close opportunity gaps and rewrite the narrative of who gets to be seen as a reader.
