Today, on Juneteenth, I honor the legacy of my ancestors through remembrance, reflection, and action.
For Our Children’s Children
My ancestors were never slaves – they were enslaved.
There’s a difference.
Slavery was forced upon them,
But it never defined them.
They were stolen.
Brought against their will.
Yet they rose.
They fought.
They endured.
This country was built on their backs
Brick by brick,
Harvest by harvest,
Tear by tear.
Built on their strength.
Built on their hope.
Hope that one day, things would be different.
That one day they would be free.
That their children
And their children’s children
Would walk in that freedom.
Would live out dreams they never had the chance to speak aloud.
Oh, to dream.
To dream beyond imagination.
Dreams of justice.
Dreams of joy.
Dreams of no chains.
No limits.
And while the fight continues,
We must celebrate how far we’ve come.
We honor the resilience
Not with silence,
But with manifestation.
With dreams for our children,
And their children.
That they too will live a life
Of no chains,
No limits.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, may we continue to dream without limits and fight for justice.
How are you honoring the day? Through reflection? Rest? Reading? Community?
